Images of Mexico and

Frida Kahlo Exhibitions

This year, Mexico celebrates 200 years of independence and the centennial of its Revolution. To mark the two occasions, Bozar Centre for Fine Arts presents a three-month-long ¡México! Festival consisting of concerts, theatrical performances, film, dance, poetry, workshops, and no less than six exhibitions.

The ACB will visit two of these exhibitions: “Frida Kahlo y su Mundo” (“Frida Kahlo and Her World”) and “Imágenes del Méxicano” (“Images of Mexico”).

Frida.jpgFrida Kahlo Y Su Mundo

The world’s largest Kahlo collection is traveling to Belgium for the first time. Nineteen paintings, six drawings, and an etching, all from Mexico City’s Museo Dolores Olmedo, bear witness to Kahlo’s brilliant contribution to the symbolist and surrealist movements.

Among some of the artist’s most powerful works on display are “El Camión” (“The Bus”), “Autorretrato con changuito” (“Self-portrait with Small Monkey”), “La columna rota” (“The Broken Column”), “Hospital Henry Ford”, and “Viva la vida” (“Long Live Life”). A selection of (projected) letters, photographs, and documents from the archives of the Olmedo Museum provides further information on Kahlo’s life, work, and family.

A guidebook helps visitors to understand the works.

Imágenes Del MExicano

The centerpiece of Bozar’s Mexico Festival is the exhibition Imágenes del Méxicano, presenting a series of 150 portraits which illustrate Mexico’s historical and cultural development.

The exhibit starts with the pre-Columbian period and ends with contemporary images of Mexico through the eyes of Mexican and foreign artists. Portraits of unknown and famous Mexicans, images of ethnic minorities, and satirical works illustrate the heritage and aspirations of an ever-changing nation. Included in the show are paintings by Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo; films by Sergei Eisenstein; and photographs by Tina Modotti.
