Spend a Surreal Afternoon with the American Club!
In June 2009, the long awaited Magritte Museum finally opened its doors. The Museum, part of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Belgium, is an exciting showcase for Belgium’s premier Surrealist artist, René Magritte.
Surrealism is an artistic movement that officially proclaimed its existence with the publication of the Surrealist Manifesto in 1924. The movement owes its name to French poet Guillaume Apollinaire, who in 1917 uses the term 'sur-réaliste' to describe a form of expression that surpasses realism. Originally, surrealism was essentially a literary phenomenon, but the principle was rapidly adopted by the arts, by music, film and photography. Surrealism developed in Paris, then world capital of art, and spread to Belgium in1924.
Our English speaking guide will introduce us to Surrealism, and to the spectacular collection of Magritte’s work. An afternoon not to be missed!
