  • The Brussels Bookswappers Club

Every fourth Wednesday of the month, booklovers get together to swap books that are gathering dust on their shelves. Come along with any number of books you wish to exchange for other titles left at the club by its members. Fiction as well as non-fiction is welcome, and there is a special section for children’s books. You are encouraged to bring books in English as well as in other major languages.

A team of Meeters & Greeters will welcome you and explain how the system works. There is no membership fee. The venue is the brasserie Aux Enfants Terribles [Chaussée de la Hulpe 190, 1170 Brussels (Watermael-Boitsfort)], near the International School of Brussels. The next meeting is on Wednesday, February 22 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. If you wish to receive further information or to be put on the club’s mailing list, contact Karen at abkginfo@skynet.be.

  • A Walk on the Wild Side
Join other English-speakers for a guided tour of the Scheutbos, a 50-hectare nature reserve west of Brussels on Sunday morning, March 25, starting at 10:00 a.m. Two guides (one native English speaker and a French-accented one) will explain the methods by which the broad and often unexpected biodiversity of this wonderful reserve is encouraged and maintained. There is no charge, since the only goal of the Friends of the Scheutbos is to educate people in how to preserve nature. The tour is two kilometers long. Children and dogs (please bring pooper-scooper bags) are welcome. Boots or good walking shoes are advised, since parts of the trail can get quite muddy, and there will be some stops for explanations, so warm clothing is recommended.

We will meet at the end of Scheutbosstraat (the rue, not the avenue), which starts on Boulevard Mettewie just opposite the end of Boulevard Machtens, close to the #49 bus “Machtens” stop and the terminus of the #86 bus from De Brouckère. Parking is available at the meeting point. For more information, contact Jean Leveque at 0496/53.07.68.

  • AWCB Annual Breast Cancer Luncheon

This year’s breast cancer awareness fundraiser will take place on Thursday, February 16 from 11:00 a.m. at the AWCB clubhouse on Avenue des Erables 1, Rhode St.-Genèse. Tickets are €25 and include a three-course meal. The annual event is open to all. To reserve, call 02/358.47.53 or sign up at the reception desk. All proceeds will benefit the Jules Bordet Institute, the only independent hospital in Belgium totally dedicated to cancer.

Representatives from Think Pink, Pink Ribbon, and the Jules Bordet Institute will speak on the fight against breast cancer in Belgium, and an expert in brassieres will give some advice. A number of AWCB members will share their personal stories with us.

There will be two auctions – a silent auction and an auction during the event. The silent auction items will be on display and ready for bidding from February 14. A number system will be used to bid on items so no one will know who they are bidding against.
